How to Save the Fuel

1. Small cars designed with fuel saving technology consume less fuel.
2. The lesser the luggage the lesser will be the fuel consumption.
3. Pool your car wherever practicable.
4. Travel by bus if feasible.
5. Avoid using automobiles for short distances.
6. Effectively plan and combine purchases and activities.
7. Go to the farthest place of business first followed by others while returning to avoid repeated starting of engine in cold condition.
8. Maintain required tyre pressure.
9. Maintain uniform and economic speed as far as possible using appropriate gear.
10. Accelerate and retardate slow in general.
11. Avoid abrupt braking.
12. Anticipate traffic conditions. Don’t drive very close to the leading vehicle. Maintain safe distance so as to avoid unnecessary braking and acceleration according to manner of driving of the vehicle in front of you under heavy traffic conditions.
13. Whenever possible, turn off A/C and open the air vents.
14. Select good road.
15. Let the periodic servicing be done without fail.

Govt may cut fuel prices on Thursday

New Delhi: The government may on Thursday cut petrol, diesel and domestic LPG prices, besides freeing fuel pricing from administrative control, a petroleum ministry official said today.

The Cabinet, scheduled to meet on Thursday, may reduce petrol price by Rs 5 a litre, diesel by Rs 3 per litre and domestic LPG by Rs 25 per cylinder, giving relief to the common man and further easing inflationary pressures, he said.

State-run oil companies are currently making Rs 9.70 a litre profit on sale of petrol, Rs 3.70 a litre on diesel, but are loosing Rs 31.70 per LPG cylinder and Rs 11.69 on every litre of kerosene.

"There is also a proposal for freeing the retail fuel prices from administrative control after a mechanism to compensate for the losses on LPG and kerosene is devised," he said.

The government will mop up additional revenues by increasing excise duty on petrol and diesel by a minimum of Rs one per litre.

For losses on LPG and kerosene, the Cabinet may decide on issuing a Rs 30,000-crore additional oil bonds this fiscal.

Petrol and diesel prices were cut only in December by Rs 5 a litre and Rs 2 per litre, respectively, as global crude prices fell to four-year lows.

International oil prices have been hovering at that level for a while and have prompted the government to think of another round of price reduction.

Petrol prices to be hiked again?

June 12, 2008 17:51 IST, India may go for another round of hike in energy prices as global crude prices continue the upward swing, says credit rating agency Moody's.

"As global prices continue to soar, the government will likely announce further increases in energy prices and cuts in subsidies," said a report by Moody's Economy.com, an associate of Moody's.

After much dilly-dallying, the government had earlier this month announced hike in price of petrol by Rs 5 a litre, Rs 3 for diesel and Rs 50 for a gas cylinder to help oil marketing companies partly meet their under recoveries because of surging global crude prices.

The government still gives Rs 300 subsidy for a gas cylinder.

The government had to face an all-round criticism for its move to raise petrol prices and even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addressed the nation to explain the rationale for the increase.

Following the appeal of the prime minister, many states also cut sales tax on petroleum products to blunt the impact of fuel price hike.

Moody's further said authorities would continue to hand out assistance to the poor households while trying to tame inflation, given that price rise is the biggest obstacle of the incumbent government in restoring voters' trust in the lead up to the general election.

Petrol up by Rs 5 LPG too has gone up by Rs 50 a cylinder

The government on Wednesday increased the price of petrol by Rs 5 a litre and that of diesel by Rs 3 a litre. The price of an LPG too has gone up by Rs 50 a cylinder.

Petroleum Minister Murli Deora has also proposed double price for extra cooking gas cylinders. He has also proposed a new distribution scheme for LPG cylinders. Only 8 cylinders will be allowed at the current rates. All extra cylinders will cost twice the amount.

The huge subsidy losses faced by the public sector oil companies due to galloping global crude prices, has led the government to impose the hike.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will address the nation at 8:30 pm on Wednesday night to explain the reason for the hike in fuel prices.

With political parties, including the Left, opposing hike in fuel prices, the prime minister had warned on Monday that government is not in a position to fully insulate the consumer from the impact of rising oil prices.

"We cannot allow the subsidy bill to rise any further. Nor do we have the margin to fully insulate the consumer from the impact of world commodity and oil price inflation," he had said.
