Factory output in negative zone; Inflation hits new 30-yr low

New Delhi, Apr 9 (PTI) India's factory output registered a negative growth of 1.2 per cent in February as demand appeared to collapse -- evident from inflation falling to a new 30-year low.

Wholesale prices-based inflation for the week ending March 28 stood at 0.26 per cent, which economists said was a result of a crisis in demand and crisis of confidence.

The contraction in industrial output also showed that the three stimulus packages announced since December 2008 haven't as yet delivered the desired results. The Index of Industrial Production numbers for the comparable period a year ago was 9.5 per cent.

Industrial growth for the period from April-February'09 worked out to just 2.8 per cent, against a whopping 8.8 per cent a year earlier.

A small ray of hope, however, was that the government revised the IIP numbers for January from the provisional minus 0.5 per cent to a positive 0.39 per cent.

Major heads under the IIP like manufacturing and mining and sub-categories like basic and intermediate items also registered a fall in February, prompting demand for rate cuts by RBI in its annual monetary policy later this month.

Manufacturing, constituting around 80 per cent in the IIP, declined 1.4 per cent in February compared to 9.6 per cent growth a year ago.

'India to see 7.3% rise in salaries this year'

NEW DELHI: India is likely to witness a moderate salary increase of 7.3% this year after registering years of double-digit growth as recession is affecting the pay, benefit and job prospects for employees, global human resource consultancy firm Hay Group has said.

"Overall, the picture for India has deteriorated...Now, with large numbers of organizations freezing pay, and predictions overall of median pay inflation of around 7.3% after years of double-digit growth, there is evidence that organizations are having to tighten their belts," Hay Group said in a report.

The report further said "the biggest concern for Indian companies is still the attraction and retention of talent as opposed to managing downsizing."

This means that Indian organizations would continue to invest in competitive salaries for high performing and high potential employees, but will also need to get more creative in developing a work culture and leadership style that enables them to become employers of choice without having to resort to the check-book, Hay Group said.

Fast-growth economies with high wage inflation such as India and China, which have seen double-digit wage growth for some years are now predicting salary increases of less than half of 2007 levels.

In India and China, the firms that are freezing pay are more likely to be local operations of multinational companies. However, if the freeze continues for another year, then companies owned by foreign firms in India and China will see a significant weakening of their market positioning compared with state-owned enterprises and indigenous companies.

Regarding the public sector companies in India, Hay Group said "pay in the public sector remains relatively modest, even after these changes (even after implementing pay reviews), but increases of this magnitude will clearly skew Indian pay market data for some time to come."

Across the globe, salary freezes have become very common with employees in 36% of companies facing salary freezes and 27% of organisations are decreasing their staffing levels, the survey said adding that "many organisations which a year ago were having trouble filling vacancies are now having to resort to job cuts."

The survey, which covered 2,000 organizations from 88 countries across six continents, said "executive pay is likely to rise even less than that of their employees and in practice many executives will receive significantly less than in previous years, as bonus pay-outs drop and the value of share-based payments is hit by stock market falls."

UPA policy on terrorism, Pakistan deeply flawed, says Advani

Bhubaneswar, April 1: The Congress-led central government’s policy on terrorism was “deeply flawed”, Bharatiya Janata Party leader L K Advani said here on Wednesday while expressing “shock” at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement about India and Pakistan jointly fighting terrorism.“I am shocked by the statement by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh reiterating his earlier stand that India and Pakistan should jointly fight the menace of terrorism,” the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate told reporters. He was responding to Manmohan Singh’s remark on Tuesday on the sidelines of the civil investiture ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan. “I have always said that India and Pakistan have to face jointly the scourge of terrorism,” the prime minister had said while expressing his sympathies to Pakistan over the terror attack on a police academy near Lahore.

World leaders arrive for G-20 summit

London, Apr 2 (PTI) Leaders of world's top 20 rich and emerging economies, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, attended a breakfast meeting ahead of the opening of the G-20 Summit here today which will seek ways for supply of "oxygen of confidence" to the battered global economy.

US President Barack Obama and Singh were one of the first to be greeted by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who is also host of the day-long G-20 Summit, when they arrived at London's ExCel Conference center.

As world leaders grapple with differences on how to overcome the economic crisis, Singh had yesterday asked the industrialised nations not to "repeat past mistakes" of resorting to protectionism and favoured sharing information and bringing tax havens and non-cooperating jurisdictions under close scrutiny.

"An issue of vital concern to developing countries is the rise of protectionist sentiment in the industrialised world. This phenomenon is not surprising, given the downturn in economic activity and the rise in unemployment," Singh said in his remarks at the official dinner hosted by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to leaders of the summit.

Obama has urged European countries to spend more to revive the economy. However, France and Germany have resisted, saying focus must be on stricter financial market regulations.

The US President and Brown have expressed confidence that the summit will come out with a strong agreement on tackling the economic crisis.

After Ford & Hyundai, GM to Make India Export Hub

27/02/2009 ,The Financial Express

Taking a cue from Ford India, Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki, General Motors is planning to make India its hub for exporting engines, powertrains as well as cars to neighbouring countries, the US and Europe.

Despite the slowdown and funds crunch, GM India hopes to match last years growth of 10% even though the industry is expected to remain flat.

The company, in addition to the launch of the new sedan (above Optra) Chevrolet Cruze and a premium mini car (on the same lines of Spark), will launch a number of different fuel models of the existing platform in India during 2009, said Karl Slym, president and managing director, GM India.

Disclosing this in Chennai on Thursday on the sidelines of the launch of its new Captiva and Spark Music cars, he said, Given the cost advantage and other positive options, GM will look at exporting engines as well as cars out of India to global markets. We have been exporting cars to Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh in a small way. Once the market sentiment improves, the company will think of exporting in a big way.

According to Slym, the company has already invested in producing 2,25,000 cars per annum across its two plants in Halol of Gujarat and Talegaon, Pune. The company has also invested in manufacturing engines/power trains with various options (diesel, petrol and other alternate fuels) keeping in mind the long-term perspective. P Balendran, VP, GM India, said, We are looking at exporting engines as well as cars to the global markets. We will wait for the market to improve and accordingly start tapping the overseas markets. Exports is considered to be one of the key growth area for GM India over a period of time.

Honda drives in power bikes

NEW DELHI: Lakhpati wheels continue to hit Indian roads. After Suzuki and Yamaha brought in their million-rupee bikes in India, it is now the turn of another Japanese auto major — Honda — to drive in its power bikes.

Honda, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI), Friday unveiled the CBR1000RR Fireblade and the CB1000R (both 1000cc), which would cost a pocket-heavy Rs 12.5 lakh and Rs 9.5 lakh respectively (ex-showroom Delhi).

And the company sounded optimistic on demand for them, which though would be limited. “We are confident of selling around 100 bikes in the first year,” said NK Rattan, sales and marketing Head of HMSI. “The Fireblade is among the few bikes in the world to sport a combined anti-lock braking system,” he added.

The Innova comes with a 1998 cc, 16V DOHC VVTi petrol engine which is compatible with CNG. The CNG Innova has a manual selector switch that enables the driver to easily switch from gasoline to CNG and vice versa. The on-board cylinder has a capacity of approximately 12kg of CNG and the running cost on CNG for the Innova is estimated to be around Re. 1.6/km or even less depending on the driving cycle.

Taking into account mileage, increased engine oil life and reduced maintenance costs, the CNG Innova offers about 50% saving over diesel in running costs. The CNG Innova will be priced at around Rs 85000 higher than the current petrol version.

Announcing the launch of the first ever CNG Innova in India, Mr. Hiroshi Nakagawa, Managing Director, TKM, said “Toyota is an environment conscious company committed to the cause of nurturing and protecting nature in its myriad forms. With CNG having established itself as an eco-friendly, reliable and economic fuel, TKM is pleased to announce India’s first ever energy efficient MPV in India. This is yet another step in our efforts to make the environment more inhabitable.”

TKM has tied up with the leading CNG kit supplier M/s Minda Auto Gas Ltd to supply the CNG kits. The sophisticated kit is not only safe; its advanced Lambda control system ensures that it meets the Euro III emission norms. To ensure that there are no flaws in the fitment process, TKM has a special arrangement with M/s Minda Auto Gas Ltd to retro fit the kits on the Innova.

“CNG can reduce carbon-monoxide emissions by over 90 percent and offers better utilization of natural energy resources. Offering the Innova with a CNG kit will only add to its long standing appeal as it will not only be eco- friendly; it will also be hugely economical. We invite our customers to discover the true value unleashed by the new CNG Innova," said Mr. Sandeep Singh, Deputy Managing Director, Marketing, TKM.

In the first phase of launch, the CNG Innova has been introduced in Delhi, Mumbai, Surat, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. The CNG Innova will also soon be launched in Baroda and Vijaywada. All Toyota dealers in the above 7 cities are equipped to sell and service the CNG Innova.

Since its launch in 2005, the Innova has been the market leader with sales exceeding over 1.62 lakh vehicles so far. It has dominated the MPV market and appealed to MPV customers as well as Sedan buyers who prioritize spaciousness and performance, achieving a 36% market share in the MPV segment in calendar year 2008. In January this year, TKM launched the updated version of the Innova with advanced and dynamic styling.

Honda Siel Cars to increase CR-V price by 30 pc

NEW DELHI: Carmaker Honda Siel Cars India on Friday said it will increase the prices of its sports utility vehicle CR-V by about 30 per cent in May, 2009, besides gradually hiking the rates of other models.

"Devaluation of rupee is impacting our business, because a significant portion of our components are imported from Japan and Thailand. This impact is about 30-35 per cent in case of CR-V," Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) President and CEO Masahiro Takedagawa said.

"We will increase the prices of CR-V in May and it will be about 30 per cent, otherwise we will make loss," he added.

CR-V is imported to India as a completely built unit. The company would gradually increase the prices of its other models that are manufactured in India, Takedagawa said.

Asked what could be the quantum of price increase for the models like City, Accord and Civic, he said: "Due to devaluation of rupee, our (CKD) completely knock down units have been impacted by about 9-10 per cent. But the price increase may not be in that level."

The company, which is present in India through a joint venture with the Siel Group, has indefinitely put on hold opening of its second manufacturing facility in Rajasthan. It has also cut its production by 50 per cent from the beginning of this year.

MUMBAI: Automobiles major, Tata Motors is planning to launch sports utility vehicles (SUVs) in Latin America. The company may launch the Sumo and Cars of the future 20 must-drive vehicles for 2009

Safari in partnership with Fiat by the end of this year, officials close to the development said, adding the company is in advanced stages of talks with Fiat.

Fiat and Tata Motors already have a 50:50 joint venture in India, which was signed in October 2007. The JV will manufacture and market SUVs in Latin America, officials said.

Tata Motors MD Ravi Kant had earlier announced plans to jointly develop some products with Fiat for some markets. The SUVs may be manufactured at Fiat’s existing facilities in Cordoba, Argentina.

A new facility may also be set up in Latin America. In both cases, Fiat would be a strategic partner, and products may be developed at a later stage. The JV will market the products throughout Latin America.

Of late, Latin America has emerged as an attractive destination for automobile and component manufacturers due to its healthy growth rate, similar norms for safety, emission and quality compared to India and less competition from big automobile brands. Tata Motors is currently passing through a rough patch, given its quarterly loss and a drop in domestic demand.

However, during the launch of Xenon on Wednesday, Tata Motors of-ficials said they were re-thinking plans to manufacture pick-ups in South Africa owing to recessionary trends.

Honda chief Fukui to step down in June this year

Japan based Honda Motor Company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr. Takeo Fukui will be stepping down in June 2009 to hand over the company’s reins to Mr. Takanobu Ito, who is currently the Senior Managing Director. Ito’s career trajectory has been strikingly similar to that of Mr. Fukui, moving from R&D to Senior Management, leading many people to speculate early on that he would be stepping into Fukui’s shoes at some point. Mr. Fukui (64) who has been Honda’s CEO for the past 6 years said that the company needed someone young like Ito (55) to overcome the current economic downturn.

Thanks to its cautious approach, Honda has so far managed to deal with the economic crisis in a far more effective manner than other Japanese car companies like Toyota and Nissan. Mr. Fukui pulled out of Formula One racing last year when no serious buyer emerged for the team and channeled the funds to the development of a new generation of cars. He also refrained from building a car factory in Russia unlike rivals, at a time when sales were at their peak.
